About Us Rovering is a senior branch of Scouting for adults. It was part of the original set of Scouting tracks when Scouting was incepted by its founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell. In the USA, Rovering was discontinued nearly 50 years ago. It's been brought back independently of mainstream Scouting programs in an effort to rekindle interest and to perpetuate the traditions of Rovering. Our crew came online in January 2006 as a member of the United States Rovers (USR). In mid-2006, our crew transfered to the new Baden-Powell Scouting program (BPS), a new organization dedicated to creating traditional Scouting opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. BPS is part of the World Federation of Independent Scouts, the second largest Scouting network in the world. Our crew consists of both men and women. None of us are registered with mainstream Scouting, although some of us have previous Scouting experience. Our ages are roughly thirty-something. We welcome new members from the Connecticut and surrounding areas. We're also here to help set up new BPS Rover crews, Wolf Cub packs and Scout troops. Some common questions we get: Q: Is this the BSA? A: No it's not, although some members of BPS are registered with the BSA. Our crew does not require membership in other Scouting organizations although dual status is allowed. Our organization is entirely independent of BSA, as such, we are not subject to their membership restrictions. Q: What activities do you do? A: We're new, so the best fun is yet to come. We specificlly like camp and hike, but anything that can get us outside and have fun is fair game for us. In the true spirit of Rovering, we also like to perform a healthy dose of service projects. Q: Can anyone join? A: Membership in our crew is open to anyone age 21 and up. BPS's guidelines place the age guidelines lower than this, but our crew has set this guideline for our crew. Prospective members should live close enough to participate in our activities. All members agree to live by the Scout Oath and Law. Come hang out with us, and if we all get along, we'll vote you in. Q: Do you wear uniforms? A: Yes we do. Our full kit consists of a safari-styled shirt, olive shorts or pants, and a neckerchief in our crew's colors. These are traditional components to a Scout's uniform. In the near future we will introduce crew T-shirts as an alternative for more action packed and laid back moments. Various members of our crew contributed to all the designs we chose. |
